Summer Term

It's been a very busy last full week of the year. The children have finished their DT projects making their fruit salads which they then enjoyed eating together on the field. KS1 also joined forces with Reception to participate in sports day. All the children worked their hardest competing in a range of races supported by their Brookmans Buddies and parents. To finish the week we saw a wide variety of Musical talent auditioning for the final of our last House competition. Well done to all the children in showing such amazing talent!

We started Diversity Week by working with our Brookmans Buddies to make beautiful rainbow crafts which we have used to decorate the school dining room. In addition to this we have made flags to represent how unique and special we all are for our Pride parade on Friday. We have also been drawing our suggestions and ideas for the new school mosaic. The children have also learnt which classes they will be in next year and who their new teachers will be and we have been having lots of discussion about changes to support the children with this upcoming change. In Literacy we have started looking at the next Anna Hibiscus story and comparing modern and traditional African cultural traditions. In Maths Year 2's have been looking at time and at mental calculations. Year 1 have been looking at money.

For our Science learning this week all the children enjoyed our trip to Whipsnade Zoo where we saw a vast array of African animals and learnt lots of interesting facts from all the Zoo members about the animals and how they are adapted to their surroundings. Ask the children if they can remember why meerkats have dark rings around their eyes or why a giraffe's tongue is purple! I would just like to take this opportunity to say how wonderfully behaved all the KS1 children were during our visit to Whipsnade Zoo. They made us all very proud.

This week the children in KS1 went out exploring the school looking for items that are alive, dead or never been alive. They found an array of different objects around the school to support their learning. The children have also been continuing to practise their cutting skills in anticipation of making their fruit salads in a couple of weeks time.

During this week KS1 children have enjoyed exploring a range of different and new fruits in a tasting session as part of our DT lesson. They tried; honeydew melon, blueberries, red grapefruit, pomegranate, sharon fruit and pineapple. Within English the children have been writing poems about the journey Anna Hibiscus took from her home in the city to the little island with a white house. Finally, in Geography the children explored the location of Kenya in the world and how this affects its climate.

It has been a very busy week in KS1. The children have had the chance to complete their fire engines using a range of resources as well as cutting their own axle with the saw.

In Science this week the children had to use their knowledge of different features of animals and to make their own animal out of playdough. They then had to label the features they had created in their animal. As it was mental health week the children have taken part in a range of wellbeing activities to remind them to take care of their minds and not just their bodies.

KS1 have been enjoying the beautiful weather this week: exploring the new areas of our OPAL play as well and working on our cricket, athletic and golf skills. In the classroom, we have continued with our DT topic designing our own Fire Engines as well as introducing our new History topic, Village Day Over Time and Animals in Science.

Welcome Back to the Summer Term

It has been lovely seeing the children back at school this week. The children have thoroughly enjoyed starting their new DT unit on creating Fire Engines. We look forward to seeing how they turn out in a few weeks time.
