Spring Term

Week Beginning 23rd February

It has been so lovely to welcome the children back into school and even enjoy a sunny breaktime or two! We have got off to a flying start with our learning and I think the subject lots of children enjoyed learning about this week was the Titanic which will be our History unit for this half term. The children's prior knowledge for this topic has been so brilliant! They have also retained lots of learning about plants which we will be going back to in Science for the next 4 weeks.

Week Beginning 2nd February

We have had a fun time in our classrooms celebrating National Storytelling Week and began our week with a workshop on the story 'I am Nefertiti' by Annemarie Anang. The children then loved creating their own poem inspired by this author and used sound as a way of turning their poems into a rap! In Science, we have looked at the importance of exercise and how it supports a healthy lifestyle and in our PSHE lessons we spoke about how we can show good listening.

Week Beginning 26th January

We have had a busy week of learning in KS1 including looking at the weather patterns on the Isle of Coll and comparing them to Hatfield Geography. The children were excellent weather presenters and now that our show and tells are in full swings, it is wonderful to see their oracy and presenting skills develop! In our CLPE sessions, the children have been discussing whether the sea snail in 'The Snail and the Whale' should venture across the ocean with the humpback whale or stick to the black rock instead. Now that we have read the story as a class, the children have been fantastic at recalling the events and sequencing them in chronological order.

Week beginning 19th January

We have had an exciting week of learning and even a special event! The inflatable dome was probably the most exciting part of our week and the children loved learning about habitats, environments and polar regions! In Maths, Year 1s have been ordering and comparing numbers and using than greater than, less than or equal signs. Year 2 have now finished their unit on shape and Mrs Emmons and I have been so impressed with how far their knowledge of 2D and 3D shapes has progressed. In Geography, we looked at the directions on a compass and used them to navigate round a map of the Isle of Struay (based on the Isle of Coll) and in RE we listened to the story of 'Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand' which the children enjoyed discussing.

Week Beginning 12th January
We have had a busy week of learning in Key Stage 1! The children enjoyed sorting food packaging into food groups within their Science lesson and used great vocabulary like 'healthy', 'dairy' and 'carbohydrates'. In Geography, we have begun looking at the Isle of Struay (based on the Isle of Coll) within the story of Katie Morag and the Two Grandmothers. The children were excellent in spotting human and physical features and used their locational knowledge wonderfully. Phonics groups have got off to a good start and we have been really impressed with the amount of reading children have been doing on a daily basis across the phase.

Week Beginning 6th January

It has been a wonderful week back at school and the children have settled back into their routines really well. We have all been reading a book entitled 'Clean Up' by Nathan Bryon.
The children have loved reading about the adventures of Rocket and how she creates her own 'Clean Up Crew' to tidy a beach in her grandparents coastal home.
We will be continuing this story next week as well as commencing our new phonics groups. In Science, we have started our new unit on Animals Including Humans and looked at the basic needs for survival. The children were excellent at recognising what a living thing needs to survive and we are looking forward to seeing their learning progress. Finally, we completed lots of PSHE and wellbeing related activities this week looking at what we hope to achieve this year and how we can be kind to ourselves, others and the planet.
