Autumn Term

Week beginning 13th October

We have had lots of exciting lessons and spent time in the outdoors! In Science this week, we all went outside to draw a tree in the school grounds that we will visit in all the seasons this year. We spoke about the fallen leaves, the autumn colours and drew beautiful and detailed observations of what we noticed. In CLPE, children have enjoyed roleplaying and writing their own version of 'The Secret Sky Garden'. Some even came up with their own settings such as 'The Secret Playground' and 'The Secret Stadium.' In Maths, Year 1 have been looking at at addition and subtraction number sentences and Year 2 have started their addition unit looking at fact families and the connection between number bonds to 10 and 100. In Computing, we completed an E-safety lesson and thought about ways to make ourselves and others feel happy in PSHE. The house cross country was also a highlight of the week and it was great to see so many children showing a growth mindset and cheering their team mates on.

Week beginning 6th October
We had a great week following our walks to the village and began to think about ways in which Brookmans Park village green could be improved. Some of our ideas were to install a zebra crossing, have speed cameras or adding a set of traffic lights. It has been great to hear the children's ideas and they have been so enthusiastic when learning about their local area.

In Maths, Year 1 have been completing number bonds to ten and addition word problems. In Year 2, we have been using lots of concrete resources to count in our 2s, 5s and 10s and then even our 3s! The children have been great at ordering the numbers in these multiples and it will serve them well when we look at multiplication later on in the year. In Science, we spoke about the human life cycle and how there are different stages to each person's life. We enjoyed looking, roleplaying and exploring each stage and discussing what we are like in each phase of our lives. Today marks Mental Health Awareness Day and so in our classes we have spoken about why looking after our minds is so important and how using mindfulness and exercising can be great ways of feeling positive.

Week beginning 29th September

We have had a great week in class and I think if we had to ask the children what their favourite lesson was, it would be Science where we used our five senses! The children tasted a variety of foods, smelt mystery smells, touched things like marshmallows without looking, drew an observation of a plant and shook containers with hidden items to use their ears! The children loved guessing what item they had encountered and used amazing vocabulary to describe their senses too. In Maths, Year 1 have been doing really well at using part whole models and recognising different ways of making numbers up to ten. In Year 2, we have been looking at placing numbers up to 100 on a number line and then comparing numbers using the <, > or = sign.

We had lots of fun in the Harvest Festival assembly on Monday too as each class performed either a song or poem in the theme of Harvest and Autumn. Thank you again for all your generous donations.

On Thursday, we all celebrated National Poetry Day with a live lesson delivered by Simon Mole, a poet who has written poems on topics like bugs and dinosaurs! It was great to see the children use their creativity and come up with their own dinosaur names and rhymes! In RE, we looked at the holy book of Judaism named the Torah and continued practising our mouse skills on Chromebooks in Computing.

Week Beginning 22nd September

It has been a lovely sunny week in KS1 and we have been busy both in and out of school doing lots of learning!

The highlights of our week included going for a walk to the village green, looking at the human and physical features and completing a survey, learning about the senses in Science and which organs and body parts help us to use them and listening to the story of Noah's Ark in our RVE lesson. In Maths, Year 1 have begun using number lines within ten and and in Year 2 we have started counting in 10s on a number line and then filling in missing numbers going up in both tens and ones.

Week Beginning 15th September

We have been really getting back into our school routines and embracing lots of learning challenges. In Year 1, we have been looking at one more and one less within 10 and using words like 'greater than and 'less than'.

In Year 2's Maths lessons, we have been building numbers using place value grids and then began to partition them into tens and ones. Our new aim is to partition numbers within 100 in different ways by moving a ten over to the ones column e.g. instead of 50 + 4 = 54, we might say 40 + 14 = 54.

CLPE groups have enjoyed predicting more about Funni in our story and how a new character has been introduced to hopefully cheer her up! We were all so good at using drama skills and a role on the wall activity to write or act in the role of Funni too. In other subjects this week, we explored turning on and using the trackpad of a laptop in Computing, looking at some of the holy books in RE and started to learn the names and locations of our skeleton's bones in Science.

Week Beginning 8th September 2025

We have begun our lessons and have been so impressed with the knowledge and contributions which the children have made in class. Well done Key Stage 1! In our Geography topic, we began our unit on the local area and even went for a short walk to look at some of the road markings, signs and features of Bradmore Way. We are looking forward to doing another local walk with parents who are able to come along later in September too! In RVE, we spoke about books which are special to us and about why stories can have special meanings to different people. It was lovey to hear why certain books are special to us and when we like to read them most.

In Science, we have begun a fascinating unit all about the human body! We labelled the body with the parts we already knew about and then got to draw around a member of our group to add more! After this, some of us chose to roleplay as doctors and nurses while others enjoyed making body figures out of playdough while labelling the parts. Next week we will be looking at the human skeleton!
