Art

At Brookmans Park School we intend to provide pupils with not only a high-quality, well-planned and progressive education in Art, but also to instil a love of the subject for the rich and diverse opportunities that it can offer them.   Art is valued in our school as an important part of our children’s entitlement to a broad and balanced curriculum. Aside from the enrichment it brings to their wellbeing, we also believe that the high-quality Art lessons that we offer will inspire the children to think innovatively, exhibit their creativity and use problem solving techniques as well as enabling them to push through their comfort zones and develop a sense of individuality.

Our extensive curriculum gives our children the opportunity to develop an extremely wide skill set of techniques using a range of media and materials, as well as an intrinsic understanding and appreciation of art history from many cultures and eras, broadening their knowledge and cultivating interest in the subject. Our children are consistently introduced to a multitude of various artists, movements and styles, ranging from the masters to modern, providing them with the enthusiasm, inspiration and ability to use artistic vocabulary and language as well as implement their own originality and creative individuality into all of their outcomes.

Our pupils are shown how Art both reflects and shapes our history, and contributes to the culture of our country, as well as other countries and the entirety of the world around them.  They are taught to consistently reflect on their artwork, evaluating and realising ways that create progression in their own work, constantly improving and applying new skills, and becoming competent and enthusiastic artists.

As a school, we are certain that we stimulate and motivate the children by engaging them through curriculum topics, but also encourage them to look beyond Art in the classroom, by offering insight and opportunities for expansion through external research, cross-curricular learning and through a selection of Art-based days, enrichment opportunities, competitions and creative extra-curricular clubs.

To support learning in Art, we encourage all of our children to:

  • Be confident in using a range of media and skills.
  • Generate their own ideas to create visually appealing work and interesting, unique concepts.
  • Apply technical knowledge and skills to create high-quality works of individual Art.
  • Take risks and experiment with techniques which may be out of their comfort zone.
  • Critique, evaluate and refine their ideas in order to show progression with every piece of artwork.
  • Develop a solid base of knowledge in art history to inform their work.
  • Be expressive and love the subject!

As a school we are dedicated to the teaching and delivery of a high-quality Art curriculum which is valued around the school and shows through vibrant and beautiful displays as well as high quality sketch books, showing a variety of work and valuing the Artistic journey that each child makes.  To support this learning, we offer:

  • A well thought out, whole school, yearly overview of the Art curriculum which allows for progression across year groups in all areas of Art, including, but not exclusive to: clay work, painting skills, printmaking, 3D modelling, drawing techniques, textiles and collage.
  • Well planned and resourced lessons providing children with a hands-on and enriching experience - and led by an Art specialist teacher.
  • A range of skills being taught, ensuring that children are aware of their absolute potential as well as health and safety considerations when completing practical work.
  • A highly informative art history content, crossing genres, cultures, eras and Art movements.
  • A subject that is taught across the school by 1 teacher, enabling relationships to form from Year 1 all the way through to Year 6.  We find that this enhances the progress made by children throughout the school and the range of the expertise of our Art specialist teacher pushes normal Art lessons to exceptional Art lessons.
